How Can You Help This Student?

By Mona Pelkey

Poor Candace!

She can't get any help at her learning center. Everyone seems to ignore her. Nobody wants to help her. She has personal problems, it's true, and she has brought some of them on herself. She is not a "fun" drop-in, that's for sure. But hey, she is standing in your doorway, and you are pretending to be on the phone…but she just won't go away!

Candace is the September "student of the month" in our feature "How Can You Help This Student? Not one person responded to her plight in our online forum. Hmmm…wonder if we could suggest another office on campus, if we cannot help her personally. Check out her story on www.learningassistance.com/forums.

And then there's NEIL…

Neil is a lot of fun. In fact, he is Mr. Congeniality with all of the learning center staff. He drops in and seems to hang around a lot. He likes to joke around and everyone seems to like him. There is just one problem: Neil's grades are poor, and he needs to work hard and stay focused while he is at the Learning Center, but he is very easily distracted. He is also very good at distracting other students and the staff!

How can we help Neil to stay on task, and still enjoy his company at the Center?

Post your suggestions in the appropriate thread at www.learningassistance.com/forums

Remember, your responses help others to help students!
