Andrea Kosling

Andrea Kösling

Andrea Kösling grew up in Germany, where she completed her high school education. She studied at Selkirk College in Castlegar, British Columbia, Canada, 1993-1996, before transferring to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where she completed her Bachelor of Arts in English in 1999.

Like many others, Andrea fell in love with the Kootenays and returned to work at Selkirk College as the Writing Centre tutor and an English marker in 1998 before being hired as a Learning Specialist in 2001. While working in this position, Andrea completed her Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, in 2003. Her thesis was a research project on students' readiness for college as measured by the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory.

Andrea is highly respected by students and faculty alike. Instructors at Selkirk College (some now retired) have referred to her as the "best math student I've ever had" and "an expert learner." Students have called her a "life saver" and have said that "she has a gift of explaining complex things in simple terms that make sense."

Andrea's approach is based on respect and appreciation of the individuality of every person. Her approach to helping students become more efficient and effective is based on cognitive and brain-based learning. Her goal is for students to achieve their academic goals, of course, but, within that, Andrea strives to give students the skills and tools so that they can be independent and tackle any learning task on their own.

During her spare time, Andrea loves to play volleyball; she is an avid gardener and landscaper, and she can't wait to discover more of the beautiful mountains in the area.
