The Secret of Success

By Mon Nasser, Editor

A few years ago I discovered something that was truly amazing: The secret of success!  I was first introduced to this secret by Earl Nightingale's program "The Strangest Secret." The original recording of The Strangest Secret was written and recorded in the mid-fifties.  Earl discovered the message by reading a book by Napoleon Hill titled "Think and Grow Rich".  This book was first published in 1937 and was the result of an investment of twenty years of Napoleon Hill's life.

So what is the secret of success?  You will have to read the books to really understand it, but here is how Earl Nightingale puts it: "We Become What We Think About."  OK, so how is this useful?  Well by controlling what we think about, we determine what we become!  This is a very powerful statement.  Even though it became prominent with Hill and Nightingale's messages, its theme was actually communicated long before these two men.  Look at these quotes for an example:

"If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I acquire the ability to do it, even if I did not have the ability in the beginning."
- Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948)

"Whether you think you can or think you can't -- you're right."
- Henry Ford (1863 - 1947)

Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.
- Frank Outlaw

If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you like to win but think you can't,
Its almost certain that you won't.
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger woman or man,
But sooner or later, those who win
Are those who think they can.

"Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we often might win, by fearing to attempt."
- William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

"People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves they have the first secret of success."
- Norman Vincent Peale (1898 -1993)

"Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens."
- John Homer Miller

"If you can learn to THINK BIG, nothing on earth will keep you from being successful in whatever you choose to do."
- Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., Surgeon (b. 1951)

"Both poverty and riches are the offspring of thought."
- Napoleon Hill (1883-1970)

"There is only one small letter between the words CAN and CAN'T...and that one letter will TOTALLY change your destiny."
- Doug Firebaugh
